Cuticle Care

Cuticle Care

By Kimberly –Glamour Secrets Beauty Bar

Cuticles play an important part in the overall health of your nails. They act as a protective barrier for the fast growing soft keratin that eventually becomes your nails. Keratin is a fibrous protein forming the main structural constituent of nails.

If your cuticles are neglected they may become damaged, dry and harden. This will cause discomfort and pain and could lead to infection that will impact the overall health of your nail and will lead to them being soft, discolored or misshaped.

Healthy treatments = Healthy nails. Your cuticles need regular moisturizing just like your skin to maintain their health and structure. Use cuticle oil, cuticle conditioner or coconut oil regularly between manicures to keep them healthy and strong.

Are you tempted to cut, bite, clip or trim your cuticles? DON’T! Cutting or trimming cuticles at home increases the chances of breaking the protective barrier, and allowing germs to enter and infect the cuticle or nail area. It is crucial that you go to a professional who understands how to provide a safe and healthy manicure service without damaging the cuticle.

If you suspect you have a cuticle infection, go to the doctor. Doctors can easily treat cuticle infection with antibacterial and anti-fungal treatment.

Do you find your hair is greasy every day and you just cant stand it? Here are some tips and facts that you can learn from to escape from that grease ball of a head of yours!

The skin on your scalp, just like the skin on the rest of your body, is full of pores that are connected to “sebaceous glands.” They secrete the natural oil called sebum. This sebum is essential for keeping your hair soft, smooth and manageable. However, sometimes the glands produce sebum in excess amounts that cause your hair to be oily and greasy all the time. But what are reasons why this happens

1. ONE OF THE TOP CULPRITS: Washing your hair with shampoo every single day. When you do this you are telling your body you need to produce the oils quicker then necessary, because they are constantly being stripped when you washout your hair. Tip: To gradually get out of this habit, if you shower everyday, try not washing it with product. You can wet it, but don’t use any product until your body has been retained.

2. YOUR HAIR TYPE: If you have fine hair, it means there is too much oil being secreted by your scalp and not enough hair to absorb the oils. If its straight on top of that, the sebum tends to travel easier from roots to tips. Tip: Refer to reason 1

3. IT COULD BE HORMONAL! Taking certain medications, pregnancy, menopause, puberty and even stress could disturb your hormonal levels. This could cause a spike in production of sebum on your scalp

4. PLAYING WITH YOUR HAIR TOO MUCH? Not only are you transferring the oils from your hands to your hair, but you are also pulling the oils through your hair from root to tips.

5. USING HOT WATER! This is a hard one, I know. But hot water stimulates the glands and encourages them to produce more oils. OH DEAR! So: Rinse hair thoroughly for 30 seconds to make sure all product has been rinsed.

I hope this info helps an oily, greasy someone.

Microneedling, dermarolling whats the hype about ?

Microneedling sometimes called dermarollingis typically performed in a series of four to six sessions, spaced about a month apart.

The needles are inserted deeper at each subsequent session, as the skin becomes thicker and can tolerate it.

During the procedure, a topical anesthetic is applied and then a pen like tool called a derma roller is used to insert tiny stainless steel needles into the skin to cause microinjuries or punctures. The idea is that the damage caused by the needles encourages your body to send healing agents (elastin and collagen) to the cuts to repair them.
By making tiny columns of trauma in the dermis, the body is forced to make new collagen to fill them in and heal them. This new collagen makes skin look and feel slicker, tighter, and more youthful.Because the sun breaks down collagen, and our skin naturally makes less collagen as we age, any intervention that encourages increased collagen synthesis can make skin look and act younger.

After the procedure, a collagen enhancing serum is applied.

If you have sensitive skin, you must be very careful when applying any topical serums or products with active ingredients after the treatment. Your skin will become more sensitized after the treatment because it is already inflamed. Also, by making tiny channels in the skin, it allows product to get deeper into the skin, which can be more irritating.

Some clinics use hylaronic acid on top of microneedleing. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally present in the human body. It is found in the highest concentrations in fluids in the eyes and joints.

As with any minimally invasive procedure, the best results come to those patients who use microneedling as a part of a larger skin care and skin anti-aging regimen.
There is also a lot of interest in using hyaluronic acid to prevent the effects of aging. In fact, hyaluronic acid has been promoted as a “fountain of youth.”

What Are the Risks?

Microneedling can cost a quarter of the price of getting multiple laser treatments, depending on the skill level of the practitioner.

It also tends to be a comfortable procedure with low risk and short recovery. the risks involved with receiving microneedling are lower than many other skin treatments, such as chemical peels or light/laser therapies. The procedure is more effective than more aggressive treatments for acne scarring. However, like any procedure, microneedling can cause possible complications, including bleeding, bruising, infection, scarring, and pigment problems.

Glamour Secrets Beauty Bar in Chilliwack has medically trained aestheticians to perform this treatment.

Book Now and enjoy this minimally invasive treatment that helps restore your youth.

Dermaplaning at Glamour Secrets Chilliwack

I recently had a Dermaplaning “manual exfoliation” treatment done, at Glamour Secrets Beauty Bar in Chilliwack . My skin has never been so smooth and my foundation has not gone on so flawless

~ a happy client

Dermaplaning at Glamour Secrets in Chilliwack

“What is Dermaplaning?” , you ask

Dermaplaning is a simple, safe and non-invasive procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). It has been used for many years, but many estheticians don’t even know it exists, and certainly, many don’t use it.

Who may have this treatment done and what are the benefits?

Dermaplaning currently has no negative effects. It has become extremely popular in Medi-Spas cross country and comes specifically from California.

How is this treatment done?

A scalpel is delicately used to wear away the surface of the epidermis, using delicate feathering movements. Benefits include the appearance of reduced deep “pit-like” acne scars to produce a more even, smooth complexion. Dermaplaning is meant to treat much smaller, but much deeper scars that can come from having cystic acne. There are gentler methods of dermaplaning that are occasionally used to exfoliate or as hair removal treatments.

What skin types benefit from this treatment?

All skin types can benefit from Dermaplaning, however, an acne skin type and an excessively oily skin needs to be thoroughly cleaned before. This is a great treatment to offer to patients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliation, but are not allowed to use peeling agents or harsh chemicals on their skin because of the risk that the chemicals will be absorbed into the blood stream, and may be transferred to their unborn child. It is also a first choice for patients who have excess fine hair on the skin. Fine hair often causes a buildup of dirt and oils in the follicles, so removing the hair gives the patient healthier looking skin.

Dermaplaning treatment takes approximately 45 minutes and includes a facial massage in the session. It is recommended that you return every 3-4 weeks for maximum effects.

TRUSCULPT ™ – the non evasive way to get rid of fat

Trusculpt is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure that makes use of Radio Frequency (RF) technology for body contouring, body sculpting, fat reduction and cellulite removal. Designed to address problem areas like the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, and flanks, this treatment works for all types of skin. TruSculpt is an FDA- and Health Canada approved procedure.

How TruSculpt Works

With RF technology, TruSculpt makes use of comfortable and tolerable heat that emits from the handpiece that an expert provider carefully applies on the treated area. This heat will work to break down the fatty tissues and may be adjusted according to the patient’s comfort level.

Each application or pressure takes four minutes on average to administer, and then it is repeated until all areas are covered. A single, complete procedure takes less than an hour to finish. Patients report feeling no pain or irritation, only mild discomfort at the start of the procedure.  TruSculpt requires no downtime following the procedure and patients can proceed with normal activities after their appointment.

Visible Results of a TruSculpt Treatment

Reducing and destroying fat cells scientifically cannot happen overnight. TruSculpt procedures require regular visits to the clinic to up to three months. Significant results will be gradual, but many patients see noticable effects during the first few weeks of the treatment phase. Improvement, however, will be most satisfactory and rewarding with continued treatments.

Limitations of TruSculpt

Although safe and painless for most, TruSculpt cannot be administered to patients who have cardiac pacemakers, metallic implants, or defibrillators. Patients with tumors are also advised against the procedure.  It is recommended that pregnant women wait a few months after giving birth before undergoing a TruSculpt treatment.

Differences between TruSculpt and Other Fat-Reduction Procedures

With Liposuction: This invasive procedure is more effective for those who require considerable reshaping, contouring and fat removal. The patient who undergoes liposuction is treated as a surgical patient, and may have to take a few weeks off to recover from the procedure. Some scars, although quite small, will have to be treated and cared for after a liposuction surgery to become invisible. TruSculpt, meanwhile, is an alternative that works best for moderate, but varied, problem areas, with little to no recovery time needed.

With CoolSculpting: CoolSculpting is also an FDA-approved non-invasive procedure that reduces fat in the opposite way. While TruSculpt makes use of heat, CoolSculpting makes use of cold temperatures to remove fatty tissues with a clamp applicator.  Like TruSculpt, a single CoolSculpting procedure takes less than an hour to complete and recovery is fast. There are some limitations to CoolSculpting though, because the clamp applicator requires patients to have enough bulge to squeeze. As a result, CoolSculpting is most often used to treat the only  abdomen and hips (or love handles). People often find this procedure uncomfortable and can cause bruising in the area. Some patients have experienced a pins and needles felling afterwards and loss of sensation to the area treated.

Acne – teens or in your 40s, we can help

Unfortunately for many Canadians, acne remains a primary skin concern whether they’re in their teens or 40s. It is estimated that more than half of teens and young adults suffer from acneic symptoms, with the average age of acne sufferers rising from 20.5 years old to 26.5 years old over the past decade.

If you’ve been in any store that sells health and beauty products, you’ll know there is no shortage of products attempting to heal current breakouts and prevent future ones. Key ingredients like Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide and Glycolic Acid are common but when and how you should use them varies. Not to mention, the rules that coincide with mixing different ingredients within your routine. We all know how much information is out there but finding the best solution for your skin isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Our licensed estheticians are answering your top questions regarding this common skin concern.

Q: I know what acne is, but remind me.

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles of the skin. When you think of acne, you probably imagine inflamed breakouts, but acne lesions can be non inflamed as well.

Non-Inflamed Breakouts

  • Micro-comedones: clogged hair follicle or pore in the skin
  • Open comedones: a clogged follicle that reaches the surface of the skin and opens, commonly known as blackheads
  • Closed comedones: a clogged hair follicle that stays beneath the skin, producing a white bump
  • Papules: a small, solid raised bump

Inflamed Breakouts

  • Pustules: papules filled with pus
  • Nodules: large, painful, solid lesions
  • Cysts: deep, painful, pus-filled lesions

Q: I want to revamp my entire regimen to focus on my blemishes, which products do you recommend?

  1. Cleanser: Becausecleansers spend minimal time on your skin, it isn’t necessary to spend too much time worrying about your selection. If you have a cleanser that you currently love, stick with it. If not, look for one that is gentle, yet effective at removing dirt and impurities.

  1. Moisturizer: Choose an oil-free and lightweightmoisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. It may seem counterintuitive but using a moisturizer can drastically improve oily skin, which is a major cause of acne. By keeping the skin hydrated, you won’t have to worry about it over producing oil to compensate.
  2. SPF: if you use any product, let it be anSPF! We have a variety of options depending on your skin type and all of our bases include pure mineral sun protection, so you have no reason not to include this vital step in your daily routine.

  1. Cleanse
  1. Exfoliate: Introducing anexfoliant into your regimen can help speed up your cell turn over process. However, over exfoliation can be detrimental to your skin’s health. Make sure you’re not over doing it by only using these products 1-3x per week.
  2. Serum: A crucial step in fighting acne around the clock, serums boast potent, active ingredients that can help speed up your skin’s natural processes. One of our top-sellers,
  3. Moisturize (if necessary)

Q: I’ve tried everything and my acne still isn’t going away, what else can I do?

If you’ve exhausted over the counter options, it might be time to see a licensed esthetician for a professional treatment alternative. Depending on the severity of your acne, the relatively low dosages of active ingredients in consumer products might not be enough. Talking with a professional about your skin concerns can be incredibly beneficial in getting you the treatments your skin needs. Laser Genesis is a safe and effective way to reduce acne and acne scarring

Laser Genesis is an excellent treatment option for both acne scars and the redness left behind after old acne clear (called post-inflammatory erythema.).  We use the Laser Genesis to treat rosacea, decrease the size of enlarged pores, improve the appearance of fine lines on the skin, and of course to treat acne scarring and the marks left from acne.” The Laser Genesis works in two ways to improve acne scarring.  The first mechanism collapses tiny, superficial blood vessels on the skin that produce the appearance of redness on the area of old acne lesions.  The second mechanism promotes the production of healthy collagen to improve the texture of pitted acne scars.  One of the great things about the Laser Genesis treatment is that it does not require any downtime and the treatment itself does not involve any discomfort. You may continue your prescription and at-home acne treatments while undergoing the series of Laser Genesis treatments.  Laser Genesis does not make your skin more sun sensitive or interact with any other treatments.  After a series of Laser Genesis treatments, dramatic improvement is seen in both the texture and tone of your skin.  Laser Genesis is an exciting treatment, because it addresses many factors that lead to the appearance of marks and scarring on the skin.  There is no need for separate treatments to address redness and shallow scars; both issues can be treated simultaneously with the treatment.

Glamour Secrets – Your Skin Care Specialists

At Glamour Secrets we take your skin health seriously. There is no shortage of skincare information, recommended routines, top 10 lists, or tutorials on the internet. You could spend hours researching which serum or treatment is the best out there. However, you have to take into account that the person writing (or filming) that advice likely has a different skin type and concern. While there are plenty of skincare products that work well for all skin types, what makes the most difference is what you pair them with and your overall routine.

Treating your skin with the wrong routine can be detrimental. One way to make sure that you receive advice tailored to your skin concerns is to see a skincare specialist. A skincare specialist will determine your skin type during a consultation period and recommend a morning and night routine to meet the needs of your skin. If you have sensitive skin, allergies, or experience rosacea or eczema – you may want to avoid specific ingredients which your specialist will help you navigate around.

Not only do you get individualized recommendations by visiting a skincare specialist, you can trust that they are offering quality information backed by education and experience. There are so many DIY skin treatments found on Pinterest, Youtube, and blogs that tout incorrect information or recommend using products that are harmful to your skin. For example, any article or tutorial recommending to apply lemon directly to your skin should be avoided. Without dilution, lemon juice is far more acidic than the natural pH level of your skin and can cause inflammation, rashes, and increased photo-sensitivity – all often worse than the problem that was being treated.

Additional benefits of seeing a skincare specialist is the opportunity to jump start your skincare progress with a professional grade treatment. The products a dermatologist or esthetician offer are often much more powerful than the products you have access to as a consumer. If you’re trying to combat seasonal dullness before a holiday party, a FIRE AND ICE FACIAL results in a complexion that is dramatically refined, with no downtime, peeling, or other negative side effects.

Whether you’re adjusting your regime for the summer season, jump starting your holiday ready complexion, or treating an overarching concern, seeing a skincare specialist is a great first step to clear and flawless skin.

LASER – for Hair Removal and Skin Care

Are your legs ready for shorts this summer? How about bikinis? Maybe you’re not as confident about showing off your legs as you’d like to be, but there are a few things you can do to get them looking sexy by the time summer rolls in. Summer means less clothing coverage for issues like spider veins, and it also entails lots of leg shaving if you intend to dress according to the season.  If you are self-conscious about unsightly spider veins or want to eliminate the need to shave almost daily this summer, you’ve got some options at Glamour Secrets Chilliwack.
laser hair removal

Laser Hair Removal

Especially if you have dark hair, shaving is a daily task during short and swimsuit season. Laser hair removal is a fantastic option for up to 95 % permanent hair reduction on the legs. This
treatment targets the hair in the follicle, interrupting the growth cycle.  Glamour Secrets Chilliwack uses medical grade Lasers. Cutera Exo is a cut above the competition and can safely treat all skin types . We can reduce unwanted hair virtually anywhere on the body permanently. Achieving smoother legs usually takes 6-8 treatments but some require more or less sessions. Laser hair
removal also requires you to avoid sun exposure before and after treatment, so to be ready for summer, you’ll want to schedule treatments in early winter or early spring – the sooner the better if you want to appreciate results for summer 2018.

Getting a late start? Even if you are only able to get in a few sessions, you will likely appreciate some results before the summer season officially begins. Then you can complete your essions in the fall or early winter.

Spider Vein Treatments

Spider veins are small, red or purple blood vessels that are visible through the skin, typically appearing on the legs and face.  Vein Therapy CUTERA XEO Vein Therapy for the Face & Body For women & Men of all skin tones and types The Cutera XEO difference. The Cutera XEO combines the ideal laser wavelength with the most exible parameters to deliver a superior vascular laser system. It treats a broad range of vessels from tiny spider veins to deep blue reticular veins quickly, safely, and effectively. Patients with dark, light or tanned skin can experience outstanding results with minimal bruising or blistering.

How does XEO Vein Therapy work? The Cutera XEO systems deliver pulses of light energy which cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is later reabsorbed by your body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface, where it should be.

Who can be treated with the Cutera XEO? The Cutera XEO features a unique design and long wavelength that allows treatment of patients of all skin tones. Your physician will advise you if XEO Vein Therapy is right for you.

What types of veins can be treated? The Cutera XEO can remove unsightly veins from all parts of the body. Small, facial veins (or “telangiectasia”) can be treated quickly without bruising or complication. Spider veins and large blue leg veins can also be treated with excellent results. Knotty varicose veins are not good candidates. A careful evaluation with your physician will help you determine which vessels can be treated and the best course treatment.

How does this compare to Schlerotherapy? Your doctor will advise you on the best course of action, but many physicians and patients prefer XEO Vein Therapy because there are no painful injections.

What about blood blisters and port wine stains? Blood blisters or “hemangiomas” respond very well to XEO Vein Therapy, usually with just one treatment. Patients with port wine stains and other vascular lesions who had given up on finding a solution have been overwhelmed by the success of their XEO vascular treatments. Consult your physicians for a thorough evaluation.

How many treatments will I need? Often, patients ¬find that one or two treatments are sufficient. However, the number of treatments necessary depends on the number, color, and size of the vessels being treated. Since individual results vary, ask your medical professional about your specific condition.

Do the treatments hurt? Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy are delivered through the handpiece. Although no local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required, many patients opt to use a topical anesthetic prior to treatment. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.

What happens after the treatment? Following your treatment, some redness or bruising may occur. When larger veins are treated, a tan or brownish pigment may persist for a few weeks or months following treatment. Patients who have leg vein treatments may be advised to wear compression stockings for a short period of time, and to do ice therapy.

What are the possible side effects? Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These effects typically last for less than 24 hours. Some patients may experience bruising. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and consequence of treatment.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment? Patients generally resume most normal activities immediately. However, it is recommended that you avoid vigorous activities such as strenuous exercises for the ¬rest 24 hours after treatment. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. As always, it is good idea to limit your sun exposure.

When will I see results? Most patients and that the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment. However, your results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is possible for new veins to appear, but these too can be removed with the Cutera XEO.

So, if you’d like to show off smooth, flawless legs this summer, don’t wait until it’s time to put on those short shorts. Getting your legs in the best shape possible does take some time, so you’ll want to schedule treatments soon.
